The First Adventure - Nathan Fillion at Alligator Point Pilot April 16, 2003

Alligator Point Pilot – April 16, 2003

Nathan Fillion

Once I found out there was a group attending the taping of the pilot that Nathan was making, Alligator Point, I knew I had to go. I was living in Vegas and traveled to Hollywood with 3 other Vegas Browncoats. It was a Wednesday, so we all took the day off, rented a car and drove down to see our Captain. As we drove, we were talking about episodes and thought of Jaynestown. We were remembering Wash’s statement of going to the crappy town where he is a hero. We passed a little well-known ghost town now a tourist spot called Calico. We thought that could be the “crappy town” where Wash is a hero.

We arrived in LA and picked up my sister Perla, who would be joining us. Once we arrived at the parking for the studio we walked over to Astro Burger. There were about 50 people in our group.  Browncoats flew in from all over the US and even Canada. We needed to be by fire gate 3 by 5pm. The taping did not even begin until 7pm and lasted 3 hours. So we lined up then we moved through the gate and lined up again before going into the set. As we walked in, there was a band playing and a man standing right there where we were walking by. I was walking in with my sister and the Vegas Browncoats.

I was not paying attention and just found a seat and sat down. Perla noticed that the Vegas Browncoats had sat down in the row in front of me and so begins to sit with them and asks me if I want to move and I say no. Normally I would have said sure but I was too busy trying to find Nathan. Just then I see the top of a head walking behind the set and I just knew it was him. He was walking toward the door behind the set backstage. The band was playing a number and as Nathan was approaching the door he raised his leg in a little dance jig and went through. That was my first sighting of Nathan Fillion. I went on overload. I just saw Nathan and he looked great and was happy.

My sister thought I would of course follow and sit next to her. She sat in front of me so I grabbed her shoulders and shook her saying “I just saw Nathan!” I was truly in another world and lost my head. I first saw Nathan on the soap opera One Life to Live. I remember it very clearly because my heart soared when I saw him as Joey Buchanan.  I remember the original little boy Joey, and Nathan seemed like the perfect adult version of that cute little boy. There have been many actors who have played Joey, and Nathan was the best. It was a dream come true to see him in real life.  I never even imagined I would get the chance.

I really enjoyed the pilot; it was a Kelsey Grammer production. I could see the potential after a bit of development. It was like Cheers but in a Florida restaurant. Nathan played a former racecar driver.

During a break I walked over to the other side of the audience to see the Fillionaires (a term used to describe Nathan fans). I had brought stuff for Nathan to autograph, but left it back at my seat since I was just going over to say hi. Apparently someone called Nathan over to the audience stand and he came, so I walked over. Folks were saying hi, giving gifts, shaking hands and getting his autograph.  I did not want to miss my opportunity to have an interaction with Nathan, so I decided to stay there. Perla, being smart, came over with something of mine to get an autograph. I turned out to be the last one. They called break over and I was sad. I was next and I thought I missed my chance. Then Nathan just reached up for my book without my asking. I was surprised and thrilled. I didn’t want to scare him by saying I loved him so I told him “I have liked you since Joey Buchanan.” Nathan responded, “Well that’s a long time.”

I don’t remember anything else I may have said. I do remember he had trouble with the pen and he had to go back. I also remember that in between takes when Nathan flubbed a line, he would walk around and hand a dollar to each of the other actors. Also he would talk to the extras, the background players in the scene and shake hands as if thanking them.

The MC for the audience found out there were Fillionaires in the audience and called Nathan over during a break. Nathan jumped up onto the audience seating. The MC told Nathan he had some fans out here. Nathan said, “They’re from the Internet.” Then the MC asked who had traveled the farthest, and a woman from Spain responded. Nathan said he spoke a bit of Spanish, “Las cucarachas entran pero no salen. Cockroaches enter but don’t come out.” Then the Spanish person told him that was Mexican Spanish. Poor dear later said her brain was missing and wished she had said anything else.

Nathan had to go back, but we were just happy for the opportunity to have Cappy, as we like to call him, nearby. The rest of the time we spent watching him work. The one line of the whole night I remember came from Nathan, and I was very proud that we Fillionaires remained calm and quiet. Nathan’s line was to his ex as she walked away. “I’M STILL SEXY!” I am sure we were all thinking the same thing, “Yes you are!”

The night ended and I said goodbye to the all the Fillionaires. We drove back to Vegas that same night and had to work the next day. Days after, I found out that my sister was not the person sitting in front of me that I shook. She told me I accosted another girl. I believe it; I was truly in another world. That was my first time meeting a BDH. Turns out that the girl was 11th Hour she told me at our next encounter.
