San Diego Comic Con 2014 - no pics

San Diego Comic Con 2014

Still recovering from this past Comic Con, I am writing this in Zombie Mode,  but I need to get this done before I forget. I only had tickets for Thursday and Friday. I spent most of my time at NerdHQ. Thank you to Zachary Levi and the entire Nerd Army at The Nerd Machine. You can watch all of their panels on their YouTube Channel.

Highlights: Thursday: First Zachary Levi Panel on and seeing Adam Baldwin in the Last Ship Panel. Friday: Sitting in Ballroom 20, Craig Ferguson moderating the Big Bang Theory Panel, Legend of Korra, David Boreanaz was a riot during the Bones Panel, Marvels Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  Saturday: Alan Tudyk Panel at Nerd HQ and the Thrilling Adventure Hour Welcome to Night Vale Crossover Show. Sunday: The Thrilling Adventure NerdHQ Panel

Wednesday

All I wanted is to get down to San Diego as soon as possible. I always take the train and leave what happens up to chance. I carpooled with Mom, I dropped her off and then left the car at the train station. I got there in time to purchase my ticket, go to the restroom and even run back to my car for my travel mug that I left on the top of my car. Taking the train is so nice and relaxing, no traffic lots of beautiful scenery and you can take a nap if you want. I arrived in Old Town Station and then bought a 5 day Comic Con Trolley pass. The plan is to take the trolley to the station closest to my friend and wait to be picked up. She lives about 45 minutes by trolley from the Convention Center. I ended up waiting at a Starbucks for an hour. I love waiting at Starbucks so it was fun just resting and not rushing. It felt like the calm before the storm. It turned out that most of my friends were coming in later in the day, so I had plenty of time.

All I had to do was get back to Town & Country to pick up my badge for Comic Con. I was waiting until my friends arrived so that I could meet them there. Barb and Norm are from Portland and I only see them at Comic Con. Once I got call and went back to the trolley to make my way to Town & Country. They arrive sooner than I did so they had to wait for me to get my badge. The line was superfast, too fast for me to time it. I just walked through grabbed my badge, badge holder, books and then the famous Comic Con bag. There is a show coming soon called iZombie and that was my bag. It had 3 snaps across the top and back pack straps, very comfy. I found Barb then Norm and we went off in search of food. Town & Country is a resort hotel with many dining options. We decided to dine at Trellises Garden Grille. It was delicious, it was nice catching up and taking a moment to sit before the hectic pace of Comic Con. We were also waiting for one more friend to come, Saxon and her daughter Jessica and another friend I just met Nicola a lovely girl. Once they arrived it was 2 hours later so it was time for me to return to where I was staying. Wednesday was the best day to spend with my friend at her house since she was not joining me for Comic Con fun.

Thursday

Pamela, her 2 kids, and myself have stayed together for at least the past 5 years, possibly longer. Our host was a co-worker so staying with her is a chance to catch up, however briefly. Thursday we left early, we needed to find parking and the earlier the better. Pamela has issues walking so she has a disability placard she is able to park in a lot that is full near the Convention Center and across from Nerd HQ!!! We went to breakfast in the Hard Rock at Ascension Café. Now I had actually already eaten but I ordered a bagel and cream cheese.

Now its 2 weeks later and I still have not finished this report, my apologies for the delay.

Thursday began with Nerd HQ Zachary Levi panel and progressed to the Exhibit Hall and ended back at Nerd HQ Last Ship Panel with Adam Baldwin Zachary Levi’s Panel was great. Zac puts so much work into making this a successful event for the fans, for the guests and most of all for the cause of Operation Smile. Everything that you spend at Nerd HQ go to Operation Smile. I spent a lot of money, well a lot for me. I bought 2 tickets to various panels because I thought my sister was coming then she was not coming and finally she came but only on Saturday. There was a line outside Nerd HQ just to get inside and it was both Conversation people and general attendance people supporting the cause. The girl next to me did not have a ticket to see Zac but she was a fan so I was able to spread a little Comic Con unexpected magic and make her day. She bought the ticket off me at cost. I told her whatever she felt she could afford and she paid me the right amount. So I made some of my money back on that one.

I remember the first time I discovered Zachary Levi in the show Less Than Perfect. He was such great comic relief and I loved his “unlovable” character. Then I saw him at the first Chuck Panel at Comic Con. I have been fortunate to attend all 4 Nerd HQ and I remember at the first one I thought that Zac is incredibly smart with and amazing heart. This panel solidified every good thought I ever had about him. He was charming and funny and even sang a little. The Nerd HQ YouTube Channel and The Nerd Machine website have all the panels. One thing that Zac said that made me sad is the he feels like he fails when people get upset with something he has done. He works so hard at being nice and funny and generous to those around him and when someone makes a negative comment he feels like he failed in some way and it hurts him and that just hurt me. Zac brings great joy to so many people that he should be able to feel all of that joy.

After the Panel I had to charge my phone so I just sat in Nerd HQ and checked my Twitter and Instagram. Finally had the opportunity to meet one of my followers Justin, He was looking for me as he entered Nerd HQ. It felt nice meeting someone in person that I have only seen online. He was asking me about a 3rd friend and she was in the Exhibit Hall at the Jason Palmer Studios booth in the Exhibit Hall. I have been a longtime fan of his work and was planning on stopping by his booth next so this was perfect. Justin and I made our way and finally found CB. She had a friend with her that has never attended Comic Con so they were sticking together. CB was in line for an autograph. Justin and I made my way to Jason’s booth. I met Jason and Yelena in 2003 Firefly DVD Release at the LA Comic Con. Jason made a print of the Firefly Crew. He creates a lot of artwork from Dr. Who to Harry Potter to a beautiful Once Upon a Time. He also has created buttons of some of his characters. I don’t wear costumes to the Con but I do show my fandom through t-shirts and buttons.

For some reason I misplaced my Firefly lanyard that I use to wear all of my Firefly buttons. It is what I wear to all Cons and I felt like I was missing something by not having it on. SO I had to go and replenish the buttons. Yelena was there to take care of me. I also bought a Jayne T-shirt since I was going to see Adam Baldwin later at Nerd HQ. I almost bought the Wash Leaf on a Wind t-shirt but sine I had a TeeFury Wash shirt I decided on Jayne. Still feel like I need the Wash shirt. Once I had everything I needed to make it all the way to the California Browncoats booth. We were at 4400 and I needed to go all the way to 300.

There is A LOT to see in the Exhibit Hall. It is really a barrage of overstimulation; so many displays, freebies, celebrities signing at booths.   Justin had to go the opposite way because he was trying to get someone’s autograph. CB, her Friend and I made our way through the Exhibit Hall. I only had 2 days at the Con so this was the day to walk the Exhibit Hall floor. There are so many costumes that are just so well done or simply adorable. Posing with characters is an acceptable practice. So is stopping people and asking to take their pictures, people in costumes work hard and like having the attention; that is why I do not like wearing costumes. I enjoy being comfortable and just showing my fandom. My niece loves My Little Pony so she asked me to buy something specific. I have 3 nieces so I found some niece small plush ponies and bought 1 for each girl. Now I have 5 nephews and 2 live with me and they love Skylander and Godzilla. The other 3 are a bit older and I do not know what they are truly interested in aside from video games. I did find a squishy Tardis so I bought that for myself. I was almost to the California Browncoat Booth it was row 600 and that is where I saw it: a large, 3ft plush, classic Godzilla. He looked like the Godzilla I grew up with. My brother recently bought 2, hard to find, 3ft tall plastic toy Godzilla one for each boy. So I saw it and I knew I had to have it. I asked the price and the guy explained it was $60, he told me normally it goes for over $100. I said ok, I need 2. He seemed a little in shock that I purchased both. So I was very happy. I felt like I scored. Then right next door I saw a box with the post it $3 for a mystery Godzilla figure. It showed that it could be any one of 4 for I said I wanted 4 and that is what he had left so I asked for the box but it had a display Godzilla so it was also $3. So I bought them all for $15!!!!

I finally made it to the California Browncoat booth. They did not have the leather Firefly lanyard I was looking for so I bought a different one. The leather one they usually have a Dragon Con so I will buy another one there. I did not buy anything else because although I do tend to forget I do not have as much money as I wish for everything I want to buy and it was still the first day. I knew I would be spending money at Nerd HQ so I was done with the Exhibit Hall. It was lunch time I was able to connect with my ride and leave my purchases in her SUV. After that I met up with Barb and Norm as well as Saxon, Jessica and her friend Nicola at the Hilton Bayfront Fox Sports Grill. It is really nice to sit, with friend you have not seen in a while. After that we all made our way to Nerd HQ for the Last Ship Panel. It was a really nice reunion, I found Tabin, Faeryqueen waiting as well. We all sat in different sections for the panel. Barb, Norm, Saxon, Jessica and Nicola had attended the Last Ship panel at Comic Con and they all had a personal encounter. Here is the link to the Last Ship Panel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6JjLuSi0pI&index=25&list=PLIZcsQNeOU4DgsRmX77XlclDGp7rfKX4X

When you get to 37:40 they are talking about Adam’s character was almost someone else’s. Then the producers say it couldn’t be anyone else but him, then again contracts have not been signed for Season 2. Then Adam goes on to say, “always appreciated in the now and you take the end of that stick and you take it.” He morphed his answer into a Firefly quote. It was completely random and I believe caught everyone by surprise. I laughed and I was within Adam’s line of site. I have been fortunate enough so have met him many times and he know my name and my face. IT’s not like we hang out but he does like to shout my name in greeting and give me a hug. So when he said, “…take the end of that stick sand take it. …See, see it’s over Rosie. Adam was giving me a shout out that Firefly is over since there was not a big reaction to that statement! Adam has such a beautiful joyful smile. It was a wonderful moment. As he was walking off at the end he blew a kiss as I blew one to him as a goodbye.

Another great fundraiser at Nerd HQ is Smile for Smiles. They have a photo op opportunity with a guest. I went to get in line for Adam’s Smile for Smiles. The line was too long. It felt like it was 2 hours long and Adam was only doing one hour. SO I decided to head back and see if I could catch Adam on his way to the photo op. I was standing to the side, not blocking anything hoping for a chance to get a hug. Saxon was with me, the others were not nearby. Adam saw us and made for Saxon. But I already told Saxon she already got a hug and this is my turn. I figured it had to be quick since he is enroute to the photo op. So Saxon directed Adam to me and said her turn. Adam shouted, “ROSIE!” and gave me a big hug. He has always been a sweetheart and a gentleman to me, kind and warm. I told him I was going to get in line for the photo-op but the line is like 2 hours long and he was only here for 1 hour.  He looks up at the line and then just grabs my hand and leads me to the photo op. That was truly unexpected and incredibly kind to me. We took a quick pic and I left. I was in a bit of a Cloud 9 moment and I vaguely recall him kissing my cheek goodbye. THAT was my highlight for this ComicCon. I always have a lot of wonderful things happen and that moment from the shout out, to the air kiss, to the hug and the photo op is something I will never ever forget.  Thank you, Adam Baldwin, for always being such a good man to your fans.

After this it is hard to remember. I hung out at Nerd HQ because the party for Nerd HQ began shortly after that. I do remember that I was just sitting near the Smiles for Smiles booth and saw Zachary Levi taking pics so I decided to get one. Since there was no line and I did not get to say anything to Zachary Levi during the panel I asked for permission to speak. He nodded and then I told him about how much joy he brings to so many people. He had shared during the panel that when people make negative comments about what he is doing it brings him down. I told him about the show Undateable and that they pantomime a lot. One guy said something that negative things bounce off him “Ping” and he pantomimed the negative thing bouncing off. Zac smiled and I told him he needs to do that. He has used his talent and ability to do good for those that benefit from Operation Smiles as well as the fans of all of the Celebs. Zac pointed up to God and I said, “Yes but you are the instrument God is using.” We then took the pic and I moved on.

Then I don’t think I did anything else except to hang out at Petco Park charging my phone. My ride Pamela and her kids were at the MTV Awards going on at the park adjacent to the stadium, Lincoln Park performed. We ended up leaving around 11pm.

Friday

This was Ballroom 20 Day. Here are the panels for the day:

10:00am Inside The Big Bang Theory Writers' Room

11:15am Nickelodeon: Legend of Korra: Book 3

12:30pm Bones

1:45pm Entertainment Weekly: Brave New Warriors

3:00pm Marvel Television Presents

The first panel was the Big Bang Theory Writers Panel. I really wanted to get in to this first panel. We left early and arrived at our parking garage around 7:30am. I went straight to the Marriott adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center because it is one of my ritual go to places. It feels like home to me and the selection is better than inside the Convention Center. I exited through the back to walk along the Marina because I figured the line wraps all the way there. I was wrong. This time it did not even make it down the stairs yet. As I was walking I spotted someone with a humongous Simpsons bag and had to get that for my brother. It bulky and not easy to walk around with but I was happy to get one. I took the back elevator up to connect to the end of the Ballroom 20 Line. Judging from previous experience I was close enough to get in for the first panel. Well I needed to charge my phone so I sat in the back and plugged in until someone said we are not allowed to plug in to the wall.

I was not expecting anything great because it’s the writers and not the actors. However they always have a wonderful clip montage about the show that I enjoy immensely. They did this year as well. However the real surprise was that this panel was being moderated by Craig Ferguson. He is just a delight, hilariously funny. It was definitely a great panel. I can’t remember much but I do remember laughing at many things that Craig said.

The next panel was the Legend of Korra and it was very good. I enjoy the show, the art work and the voice acting. It was nice putting faces to the voices. Korra is voiced by Janet Varney. They had a full episode for us to watch and then the Q&A. Apparently it is going to become a web series and no longer shown on Nickelodeon.

The Bones Panel was also super hilariously funny. Bones and Castle are very similar shows. Bones has been on longer and it has been said that Castle takes from Bones. I stopped watching Bone s when the young assistant was arrested. It has been a long time. This will be Bones 10th season and the clip montage they showed makes me want to start watching again. What made this panel so funny was watching David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel interact and eventually they began to sing a jingle, “Fan, fan questions, fan fan question yeah!” David I think started it and Emily kept it going for each fan question. I did not know that David Boreanaz was so absolutely funny.  I was lucky enough to have found a front row seat for this panel.

After this panel I heard that one of my favorite actors from General Hospital was on the Exhibit Hall floor selling graphic novels he wrote. The actor’s name is Michael Easton. I was told he was at his booth and no one was around. One of the great things about Ballroom 20 is the bathroom pass. During a panel you can get a pass and you must return during the same panel in order to be allowed back in. I decided that I really really wanted to meet Michael Easton so I made my way out to him. My battery life was low but I still had enough to get a picture. I got to the booth in record speed and then proceeded to explanation to Michael how big a fan I was of his by leaving Ballroom 20 and coming to meet him. I bought one of his graphic novels and he was kind enough to autograph it.  Then we had a quick pic and I rushed back to my next panel.

The next panel was Entertainment Weekly: Brave New Warriors. I only knew one actor Theo Rossi from Sons or Anarchy. Also on the panel were Tom Mison from Sleepy Hollow, Freddie Highmore from Bates Motel, and Brenton Thwaites from the Giver and Jon Bernthal from Fury. I remember being impressed by Tom Mison and his story of faking knowing French in order to get a commercial and the camera man who helped him make it though.

Finally the big ticket item for me was the Marvel Television Panel I really enjoyed the preview of Agent Carter and the clips from Agents of Shield. I have to say I was truly disappointed not to see Joss at Comic Con this year. He is usually a highlight. But the panel was great and I was happy to have made it once again to Comic Con. My favorite thing in this panel was the clip with Patton Oswalt telling us about the ID’s we were given.

After this panel I made my way over to say hello to my pal James aka Danregal. He was hanging out in the Hall H line for Saturday. I made my way out to him and then I went to the parking garage my ride was waiting for me to leave. We made our way out of the Gaslamp Quarter and ate at a Souplantation. Everyone e3lse I knew was going to the Last Ship Party. They were hoping to see Adam but there were too many people trying to get in. I was happy to get an early night.

Saturday

I only had Thursday and Friday Tickets for Comic Con. Saturday and Sunday were Nerd HQ Days. We ate Breakfast again at the Hard Rock Café then we split ways. I walked over to the Nerd HQ line and was waiting for my sister Carol. I was able to get Walking Dead Nerd HQ Tickets for her and her boyfriend. She was running late but arrived with a few minutes to spare.

I was looking forward to the panel after that which was the Alan Tudyk Panel. Alan and Nathan work much better off each other. However Alan was great he brought a bag of stuff to auction off. Usually Alan gives these items as a reward or incentive for asking a question but these panels are all about raising money for Operation Smile. Alan decided that he should show people what there was to bid on so he presented each item after each question. He had a lot of items varying in from pictures behind the scene of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil to a Serenity box light.  He kept taking questions and showing off stuff and we almost ran out of time. He also still wanted to give people something for asking a question so he started giving out dollars. Then he ran out of dollars and people from the audience gave him money to give away. Alan Tudyk is absolutely adorable and extremely entertaining. It was sheer joy watching him answer and interact with the fans and then auction items. There was a problem with the behind the scenes pics because he had 20 and someone wanted to buy all as a set. They ended up going for $20 each and I was lucky enough to get one. I recommend going to the Nerd Machine You Tube Channel to see all the panels.

My sister Carol’s boyfriend was waiting for her and we called him to get in line for the photo op because the Smiles for Smiles line gets too long. He was great about following direction. He told Carol that he was in the merchandise line for Nerd HQ almost the entire time. The merchandise line was always long. He had 2 people ahead of him when he got out. I felt bad he got out after waiting so long but I was also very happy he did not delay and we were among the first 30 to get our picture taken. I presented my Tucker and Dale picture for an autograph and then we all took a picture with Alan. It goes very quickly since time is limited and the line is long.

After that Carol and her boyfriend took off for Comic Con. I was just hanging out waiting for someone to show up at Nerd HQ. Then I was offered tickets to a Nerdist Podcast Panel at a local theater nearby. I didn’t know what to expect but I am a fan of Nerdist and took the tickets offered. I had to go pick them up outside the Convention Center. Then make my way to the theater downtown on foot. I sent messages to people I knew and finally found one person that was able to join me. She did not have Comic Con tickets either. The panel was interesting there was even an 11 year old that has his own podcast on the Nerdist Podcast Network. I must confess I was hoping that Chris Hardwick would be moderating the panel, he was not. Ben Acker and Ben Blacker were on it though. I can’t remember everyone. It was an enjoyable and the air conditioning was nice.

After that I grabbed some food. I made my way to Nerd HQ. The plan was to drop off the big Godzillas for my sister to pick up and take back home since I was going back via the train. First I had to get them from the SUV and then I had to go up and drop them off at the bell desk of our friend CB’s hotel. She was waiting for me but I took too long getting the Godzillas out of the SUV. I made my way up to the Courtyard Marriott. I work at a hotel so I am very particular about hotels and this one was gorgeous. My favorite thing was this high table with a lamp and charging stations!!! The world needs more charging stations.

Once I dropped off the bag I made my way to the main event for the evening the Thrilling Adventure Hour Welcome to Nightvale Crossover Q&A. It is a large theater and there were several rows plus people scattered about. Not too many people lining up to ask questions so I did. I told them that I go about twice a year to watch them perform at the Largo theater.  I admitted that I was not a podcast person. I was asked why not and I said that I miss the facial expressions in the Podcast! Marc Even Jackson laughed and made a joke about there being 40% less facial expressions in the podcast. Mark Gagliardi was kind and told me to do myself a favor and listen to the podcast. He said it very sweetly like it was for my own good. I am glad he did because I have been doing it and I am very happy listening when I can.

After the Q&A I went to get something to eat nearby at the Horton Plaza. Everyone seemed to be busy. I went back to the Courtyard Marriott. Met my sister there and was able to give her the bag that I checked in. I showed off my purchases. I took advantage of the charging station and had a Cosmo from the lobby bar after she left. Then I went to the Thrilling Adventure Hour Welcome to Nightvale Crossover show. I really enjoy the cast and skits of the Thrilling Adventure Hour. However this is was a crossover with Welcome to Nightvale so it was a little different. I have to say I enjoyed it but I really missed Frank and Sadie Doyle Beyond Belief. Once the show was over I ended up crashing at the Courtyard Marriott down the way. It was after 11pm and I did not want to bother anyone to come and get me.

Sunday
I called my friend and asked her to bring my luggage. Luckily I am a person that keeps everything together and does not explode all over the place so it was easy for her to grab my things and place them in the car. I met them for breakfast once more. After that I decided to walk along the Hilton Bayfront to find the displays. I heard they had a Godzilla one, They also had a lot of Simpson displays including a Dome. There was a humongous ling to get into the Dome. There was a zip line as well as a Godzilla display. I took a few pics and then made my way back to Nerd HQ.   I only had one panel The Thrilling Adventure Hour Panel at Nerd HQ. It was a lot of fun as always and I was happy to have bought my tickets for this.

I took the trolley soon after that to make my train home on time.

I have to say that NERD HQ just keeps getting better and better. My favorite thing about Comic Con is the expected things you discover.

Alan Tudyk Mentions Rosie at Con

Alan in a Convention in Australia - Mentions Rosie During Panel July 2008

What follows here is a compilation of posts about this event. My friend Fannish  from Australia was there and she sent me a heads up. She posted a video of Alan at a Con in Australia mentioning me attending the taping of a pilot he was in called Four Play. He's talking about the taping and at the end mentions Rosie was there.

http://vimeo.com/1301927

Rosie on July 09, 2008, 11:36:41 AM

Amazing, incredible and surreal is what it is. Fannish emailed me the news then I had to wait for her to load the clip.

Saxon on July 9, 2008

Can you hear me screaming? Oh*My*Gosh!!!! I absolutely LOVE him. LOVE him...that's all I can say...I also love that you can hear someone (most likely Beth'll) squee when he said your name!

        You are a celeb m'dear!

        Major *WOOT* time.

Rosie on July 09, 2008, 09:17:39 AM

         I need a swoon smiley.

Spooky on July 09, 2008, 11:43:33 AM

I was thinking more along the lines

        of a swollen head smiley!

Rosie on July 09, 2008, 12:11:04 PM

My head isn't swollen. It’s just big,

         like my smile.

Saxon on July 09, 2008, 12:14:10 PM

Exactly!! I'll tell ya though, my heart sure felt big when I heard that and saw his face! I'm sorry, but he KNEW when he dropped your name those folks would get it. It wasn't "and then I saw this one fan...Rosie..."

It was..."and then I saw Rosie *squee from crowd*..." then he clarified for those who are not in the know. LOVE IT!

Jessi goes, 'you have tears in your eyes!'...yep!

Saxon on July 09, 2008, 01:35:29 PM

I think I need me a dose of some

        Firefly/Serenity kinda 'weepy'.

Rosie on July 09, 2008, 06:04:04 PM

        I don't like weepy.

Saxon on: July 09, 2008, 06:38:48 PM

The good kinda happy/sad/nostalgic weepy...like when I saw that vid and saw Alan's face when he said he saw Browncoats in the crowd, and the way he said your name. THAT kinda goose-bumpy, miss the old days, thrill of the idea for new days...weepy! *tears in eyes* SEE!!!  *blink blink*

Rosie on July 09, 2008, 07:07:36 PM

It does look like he's thinking more than he's saying. I sounded to me like he was going to say, "Rosie she my main fan," the made it Rosie she a main fan organizer..." Then he's rubbing his eyes as he talks.

It’s just so cute and weird but good.

Saxon on July 10, 2008 12:04:38 AM

I know what you mean, and I thought the same thing...like, he said it, cuz it meant so much to him to see you there, not just 'some Browncoats', but you, someone who's been there from the beginning...but as he said the words, it was somehow something he couldn't explain in just a few words. I think he did react a bit to the 'squee' in the audience, like, 'yeah, you know who I mean'. heh.

You, my dear are an oddity in a fandom...usually when someone 'has a fan' that is as involved and 'known' for as long as you have been, it's a tad scary and there is a tinge of spooky to it. But with you, it's all good. It's fun and fond memories. You can see that in his actions and reactions with you.

I've been lucky to have had interactions with him because of you! hehe...most of my exchanges with him have been, 'Rosie says Hi', or 'This is from Rosie',  or 'Rosie has something for you...'. hehe. So, I am a bit 'known' by association. I've seen the flicker of recognition on his face, and I swear sometimes it's 'oh, it's Rosie's friend'. heh.

Thanks for giving me something to

        say to him!!

Rosie Seeing Alan mention my name in Australia was truly surreal. It’s like I live in his brain. He knows me even when he doesn’t see me. I don’t know it was weird but good. I have been truly blessed to have had so many personal encounters; very special indeed.

Mutant Enemy Strike Day 2007

Mutant Enemy Strike Day December 7, 2007

Boy am I tired. 4 hours of walking around in a circle is tiring. Not to mention the fact that I have been having foot problems for almost a year now. I keep waiting for it to get better but it doesn't. So for those who saw me limping away, I walked for an hour after I should have so that was really really not smart.

My favorite moment was when Joss invited us to join him a few weeks ago.  I thought that was so shiny. I went by myself and arrived just before 10am. I ran into Dammitgirlie in the parking lot. There were about 4 buses with folks from Seattle, Arizona and I am not sure who else. I know lots of folks from the Browncoat Cruise were there. We walked over and signed up and grabbed a sign. There were stickers with Fans Support the Writers and a spot to write what kind of fans you are.  Some said Whedon, others Real, others Smart, some Roswell, some Australian, mine said JOSS. We crossed the street to join the picket line and started walking. The first celeb I saw was Morena Baccarin she was walking with Brett Matthews (writer) then Joss. I know David Fury (writer), Doug Petrie (writer) and Tim Minear were there as well as the mayor from Buffy, Richard Wilkins. Other BDHs were Michael Fairman (Niska) Ron Glass, Yan and Rafael Feldman. From Buffy and Angel we had Amy Acker, J. August Richards, Nicholas Brendon, Tom Lenk and Eliza Dushku, then came our Captain Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau. Last but certainly not least was an appearance by Alan Tudyk.

I have never been a part of a strike before. I knew we would be walking around in circles. There was an 80% chance of rain so I was bundled up. However with all the walking and the patches of sun coming through it got warm fast so I went back the car to take off my coat and scarf. I ran into the Saxon clan at that point as well as 11th Hour and Ron Glass as he was arriving. I grabbed a donut and some water and went back to walking. It was neat seeing the same fans that go to everything there as well like James and Fireflylynn, Lexigeek and OneTrueB!x, Rayhill and many SF Browncoats. It does seem we are a core group that goes everywhere. Wyobar and her husband were there and one of the Bedlam Bards were there singing and marching. They made a filk for the strike to the Hero of Canton, very shiny. So I would walk around and see the same folks over and over. I didn't approach the cast because that is not why I was there. However when I saw Eliza I just had to thank her for all she is doing and tell her I was looking forward to her new show. Eliza Dushku is incredibly beautiful and I am sure just as pretty and smart on the inside as she is beautiful on the outside. Summer Glau was also very pretty. She was walking by herself until others started walking with her. Nicholas Brendon had shades and a hat on but I could still tell it was him. When the Captain started walking I made some sort of sound I was so excited to see him and he just looks so very good.

Saxon spotted Alan when he arrived and she called me over. Now by this time I was very very very tired. My brain was missing and it was sheer will to keep moving. I just did not want to wimp out. 4 hours does not seem that long a time to walk but having to keep a certain pace makes it a little harder I think. So I saw Alan just as he was starting to join the line. I positioned myself to say hi and he saw me and was walking around these girls and then walked behind them to shake my hand in greeting and peck on the cheek. I said "It's nice to see you." and he said "Nice to see you too." It was brief and he was on his way so that was it. I enjoyed the moment and jumped back in. I almost wanted to let Nathan know but since he was busy and did not want to interrupt I just walked by. I did make sure I thanked Joss when I got the chance. I did interrupt a guy with a camera but I just wanted to shake Joss' hand and say a quick thank you. It was a nice firm handshake. I love Joss a lot and had no more words to say, especially since my brain was missing a while back.

Once the strike ended Joss spoke a few words of thanks and what this all means to have us all come out. Then he invited us to the M.E. Picnic at the park. So off I went to limp over there. It was cold and I really couldn't walk anymore but I just had to stay and enjoy the moment. Joss was the only BDH there. I didn't go talk to him but I loved seeing him smile all day. He was gracious and spent 2 hours talking to fans until he finally stood up on a table and said good bye to everyone. Once I came home and landed on my bed I knocked out. Well I did have to take my sister to work so it was after 7pm before I came home. I went to lie down as I waited for the bathroom but that was a mistake. I fell asleep and could not move. My right foot and leg hurts like the dickens. My dad gave me a little foot massage this morning and it feels a little better but overall I feel like not moving at all. It was a mighty fine Strike Day. I hope it helps. Keep donating to feeding the writers. Striking is hard work.

Starfury Report Serenity LA November 2-4, 2007

Starfury Report Serenity LA November 2-4, 2007                                                                           Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Ron Glass, Jonathan Woodward, Mark Sheppard, Nectar Rose, Christina Hendricks and Yan Feldman

This is just a quick recap. Overall I am very happy with the event. There are always glitches and things you wish were a little different but overall I give this a B+. It was held at a club so that in itself makes it different. The Browncoat Passholders sat at round tables so walking among them for the talks was not easy. That I will blame for the lack of questions at this event. It made things much more difficult for the BDHs. They were all wonderful. I really can't say enough how wonderful I think Jonathan is at these events. He has fun and wants you to have fun as well. He is an entertainer. Not sure about the whole drinking all the time bit. Not sure if it’s his stage persona or the real Jonathan. But I see a good soul, a good heart and a real good person in Jonathan Woodward. So the fact that I bought the Alliance pass to party with Jonathan was really the event I was looking forward to. I was ticket #1 for the party with Jonathan. I give Jonathan an A+. He is just a doll and a sweetheart and he never stops trying to make sure you are having a good time. Aside from the continuous drinking I see no negative where Jonathan is concerned. It was great seeing Jewel again she is sooo beautiful it makes my eyes hurt just looking at her she is gorgeous and fun. Matty was there and he is a hoot. Morena, Ron, Adam, Mark, Yan, Christina, Nectar were all there as well. Nectar Rose is just adorable. She is beautiful, sweet, fun and great at giving talks. Besides hanging with Jonathan my other favorite moment was watching Nathan walk up to the club as we were returning from lunch. We were late for the girl’s panel. I see Nathan and I just stop and wait for him to approach. He says, "Hi ladies" and walks in. Saxon said he asked the door guy if he could go in. My brain went missing so I didn't catch that. I love my Captain.

***More Detailed Starfury Report***

I have wanted to go to a Starfury Convention for the longest time, ever since the first Firefly Convention took place in the UK. As soon as I heard about it I bought a ticket. I remember hearing that the link to buy tickets was on. I was at work went to lunch and bought 3 Alliance passes. I wanted to party with Jonathan Woodward. That was the main thing I was looking forward to. I really thought it would sell out. However some folks already had their Browncoat Cruise tickets and then Creation started selling tickets for a Firefly/Serenity Tribute. Too many choices, I chose Starfury. Jonathan and Mark spent a lot of time with fans at B3 the year before and Sean Harry has done so much having these Cons on a regular basis I wanted to go as a thank you for all they have done for the fans.

Thursday

I was absolutely flying high Thursday at work. I had gone for one day to Creation and had a blast so I was now even more excited for Starfury. I had to drive to Hollywood from Anaheim in rush hour traffic. They would only be there until 8pm. I arrived at 7:45pm. I was in a tizzy by then. I parked right in front. I ran inside and saw Saxon and Wyobar and gave them a big hug. Then I asked, "Where is registration?" and I made my way to the back. I was out of breath and my mind was missing. A couple of the girls knew me from B3 and said my name. It was nice to see them again. I picked up all 3 tickets and left. I gave Tribbelynn a ride to Glendale by taking the scenic route, which means I went the wrong way, the long way and that is a great adventure in and of itself. Let’s me just say that the sign Exit Do Not Enter is actually a very helpful sign. :-) The dinner with JenskiJen was nice. We talked about the differences in Australia and the US.  We talked about Creation the weekend before and other things in general. It was nice to see JenskiJen, James and FireflyLynn again. There were a few SoCal Browncoats like Brian who was not joining us for Starfury.

Friday

Apparently there was more registration in the morning, the first talk was at 1:30pm so I had a lovely slow Friday morning. I took my sister Carol. The Element is a club so there was a bar to the right as you enter. There were tables in front of the stage for Browncoat Passholders. Alliance Passholders had to sit off to the side or way in the back. In total there were about 200 maybe more maybe less. The way things were done was photo sessions and then talks. I was still debating getting a photo op. The Schedule was as follows:

·         10:30am Main Hall Opens

·         1:00pm Photo Ops Ron Glass

·         1:30pm Talk Yan Rafael and Nectar Rose

·         2:30pm Photo Ops with Yan Feldman, Nectar Rose and Jonathan

·         3:00pm Talk Ron Glass

·         4:00pm Photo Ops Morena Baccarin and Jewel Staite

·         4:30pm Talk Jonathan Woodward

·         6:00pm Close

·         8:30 Browncoat Passholder Party at La Cantina

Nectar Rose was the first to go on stage. She played the lovebot and shared what that was like. She basically meditated, slow breathing focus on one point. She is truly as adorable as she is beautiful. Yan Feldman was supposed to be at the opening talk with Nectar Rose but something came up so she was on her own. Nectar’s mom was eccentric so that is her real name. She started acting as a child because her mom wanted her to. She has loved it ever since. Nectar handled herself very well and I was impressed. She talked about her first time going to a convention in the UK.

·         Morena said, “Since you’re the newbie you go first.”

·         Not having a clue Nectar said, “Ok what do I do?”

·         Morena said, “Well you walk out on stage.”

·         Nectar, “There’s a stage? Then what?”

·         Morena, “Then you talk.”

·         Nectar, “For how long?”

·         Morena, “An hour.”

·         Nectar, “How many people?”

·         Morena, “About a thousand.”

Well after Nectar Rose was Ron Glass. Ron was really all over the place. I don’t think even he knew what he was talking about. I did ask him if he ever watched the DVDs since working on the show. He said he thought about it. It would be good for him so he can answer some of these questions so he is going to try for the next time. He really wants another movie but he thinks we are all just waiting in vain. He started telling a story and then told us to make sure remind him what he was saying. For the most part it was rambling but it’s always fun seeing Ron. Unfortunately I could not stay for most of Jonathan’s talk since I had to take Carol to work. Jonathan Woodward is one of a kind. He came out alone. Alone is really a lot harder. Our BDH work better together they are able to play off each other. Jonathan came up with a solution for his talk. He brought a mirror and placed it on the other chair. He is really cute and I just loved watching him. His lips were moving so I know he was talking but I can’t remember anything he said. We left for work. I went home and did not go back to Hollywood until the next day.

Adam Baldwin and Rosie

I decided to go ahead with the photo op with Adam. It was nice. I also took a picture with Dave (Suinegapf) and Adam. We were at the start of the line. Adam walks in sees Dave and says, “Dave!” and shakes his hand. Poor Dave’s brain went missing he was speechless. Adam thought he might have got it wrong for a minute. Then Dave nodded I think, I was just looking at Adam. As Adam walked away he saw me and said, “Hey” We took our picture together and then I had to get back in line for some reason then I took my picture alone.

I went to grab some coffee. Saxon was on her way she dropped off Ewok and a breakfast burrito for me. One problem with the location was that no outside food or drink was permitted; they sold Burgers, Cheeseburgers and Hot Dogs for $14 apiece. I know a bottle of water was $6. Those prices were just a bit much. So we had to go out and get something. That meant missing something. So I missed Ron and Christina’s panel. I did see the QMX panel. It was nice seeing the guys creating such great stuff. They also talked about the Serenity Replica. It’s coming but they want to make it very detailed and that is proving to be more difficult. It was nice listening to their product and knowing I have many things already. Jewel and Morena came on next. The hard thing about these panels was that getting in line was difficult. Passing the mic around was difficult since it was hard to see. The room was dark since the lights were kept off for the most part. They did a great job together. They are friends and they poke fun at each other. Adam and Mark had their talk. It was more of the same. I did go up to ask Adam about describing Casey. I told Mark about seeing him on the first Medium episode. It was quick and you never got to see him again but it was wonderful. He has been in an episode every year so he believes he will return.

I was very hungry by 4pm. Saxon and Ewok stayed for the make-up demonstration I made my way to La Cantina for dinner. It was nice to get away for a bit. The food at La Cantina is very good. Now we are getting to the best part of the weekend. Jonathan's Party Saturday night. I bought the Alliance pass because I wanted to party with Jonathan. That is where I wanted to be  and I was #1. Everyone else was buying the Browncoat pass so it was no big deal. There were about 150 Browncoat passes and 20 Alliance passes and then Saturday or Weekender Passes. So I started to worry about the party. I have been looking forward to this for a long time.

When I walked into El Scorpion there was Ray and 2 other girls. One more woman, Cathy, had walked in before Jonathan arrived. There was a long table so we moved over there. Nectar arrived with Jonathan. Jonathan was a bit confused. It appears he had no idea what was happening or why we weren't at the other party. I explained it to him and he decided that we got the better deal our bar was cool and it was more intimate. Matty (Jewel's Husband) came over to hang out with Jonathan. He is a fun guy and having Matty and Jonathan there was great. Matty was trying to figure out how the American Cons were done and which Cons I had gone to. I told him I was at the DragonCon the year he went with Jewel and there was a shindig. The security guard did not realize he was with Jewel and he was moved off stage. I told Jonathan that would be a great Con to go to. He thinks he needs to wait for an invitation. Jonathan was worried at first that all the pressure was on him but we were all just glad to be together. It turned out to be the after party for the La Cantina Party. The whole back room was full and we closed the place. I had a great time and did not want to leave. I was supposed to stay Saturday night with Saxon but she went back at Midnight.  I stayed until 2am so I stayed with JenskiJen. I was tired, giddy and a little tipsy. As I said we closed the place. We were all outside waiting for someone. I had a small purse and at one point someone pointed down to the sidewalk and I realized it was my purse. It was daylight savings so although it was 2 am it was now 1am all over again. The bar however still closed. I was very very happy that the party went so well. It was also nice that Jonathan stayed the whole time.

Sunday

Now as many of you know I am Catholic and even on Shindigs I like going to church. I went to sleep at 2:30am but for daylight savings it was now 1:30am. I awoke at 6:30am which was really 7:30am. I work on Sundays normally my shift starts at 7am so I usually get up at 5:30am. So this was like sleeping in. So I got up and got ready and headed out. I needed to find a church. I asked at the front desk and they knew there were churches but they weren’t sure if they were Catholic. He said to try the taxis. I asked one man he also didn’t know but he thought the church near the Element might be Catholic. So I took an early morning walk. It was foggy and nice, well except for all the homeless still sleeping. I found Starbucks and asked there but the girl had no idea. So I got my coffee and egg sandwich and kept walking. As I suspected the church there was not Catholic, however I was able to ask a man passing by and he knew! It was just a block down on the other side of the block basically. I arrived hoping for an early 8am Mass it as 7:20am and Mass here started at 7:30am perfect timing. I was up and ready to go. I was very happy that Starfury turned out so well. After Church I still needed a ride to get back to Saxon’s hotel since my stuff was there. I texted Ewok and everyone was still sleeping so I went back to hang out at Starbucks for about an hour and then called again. I had my coffee and I had gone to church so I was feeling great. No ill effects from the night before. The Sunday schedule was:

·         10:30am Main Hall Opens

·         11:00am Photo Op with Mark Sheppard

·         11:00am Talk Jonathan Woodward, Yan Feldman and Nectar Rose.

·         12:00pm Photo Op with Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite and Christina Hendricks

·         1:00pm   Photo Op with Jonathan Woodward, Nectar Rose and Yan Feldman

·         1:30pm   Talk Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin and Christina Hendricks

·         3:00pm   Talk Adam Baldwin and Mark Sheppard

·         4:30pm  Autograph Session

·         9:00pm  Party at Element.

So I was looking forward to Jonathan’s talk. I was hoping he would do church again. Instead he brought stuff to give away. Jonathan has moved to New York but still has stuff here in storage so he brought books and misc.  items to give away. There was Yan or Rafael trivia. Nectar Rose came off the stage to get questions from the audience. Those three worked hard to entertain. They gave up on the waiting for questions thing and just put on a show of sorts. It is nice to see them try so hard. After that talk I decided to go ahead and get the Photo Op with Jonathan. I don’t know what it is about him but he radiates this positive energy. He is fun and funny, cute and easy to talk to. It’s an intoxicating combination. So when it was my turn to pose with him I told him I had a great time at the party last night and he was glad to hear it. I was really giddy as we were posing. All I could think was I am standing with my arms around Jonathan and his arm around me. I smiled the picture was taken and off I went. Of course as I was walking away I realized I wasn’t ready for the picture. I am not sure if I was even looking at the camera at that point. I have a very distinctive smile. It’s in all my pictures it is trademark Rosie. When I got my picture back later I was looking at the camera. I did not blink but my smile, well it was in the beginning stages. I am not really pleased with it since my face looks too full. It looks like I am holding my breath or something with a small smile. It’s cute just not mine. But after thinking about it for a while I decided to call it my Jonathan smile. In that moment I was just thinking about Jonathan and I was incredibly happy that everything had turned out so well. Jonathan is a sweetheart.

Well after taking that picture I was hungry. The Jewel and Morena’s panel was at 1:30pm. I went to the food court at Hollywood and Highland with Carol, Saxon and Ewok and then came back as quickly as possible. The panel had already started. We had to finish our food and drinks. As I approached the door from one side I see Nathan walking up from the other. I stopped and waited to let him pass. The girls were behind me but I was speechless. I couldn’t even say hi. Nathan did acknowledge us by saying, “Hi Ladies” without breaking stride and walked in. As Saxon said he asked for permission to enter and the guy at the door was also speechless he nodded and then pointed him in. I just love my Captain. Nathan Fillion is one of the best. He took a moment to stop in and help the girls with their panel. He basically kept asking them questions himself. He was adorable. He asked Jewel about the Captain on Atlantis and who was better. He asked Morena about Heartland and who was a better Captain.  He asked Christina as well. They all said he was the best. There was much laughter and hilarity. Nathan is gifted in livening up any party. Poor Adam and Mark had to follow him. Nathan did not stay for their panel. At this point my mind is a blur. The guys didn’t do much in terms of entertaining they relied on the questions. Mark is great at giving long interesting answers. He loved being on Firefly and the warm welcome he received. He has worked with Adam a lot so having him on the set was great. Adam was great and at the end thanked us for all of the support. He acknowledged that Nathan is a hard act to follow.

After that was a closing ceremony where Sean Harry thanked everyone from his staff to sponsors to the guests. Each guest came out and said their piece. I remember Jewel saying that she enjoyed being reminded of something so special so thank you for that. Mark was brief with his thanks. Adam said another thanks to everyone and blew a kiss. Autograph sessions followed. I decided to have the Serenity Reference pack signed by Jewel, Morena and Ron. Adam signed my photo. I told Mark, Christina and Yan that I would love to get their autograph but I ran out of money. I did decide to purchase one for Jonathan for my photo. Nectar was next to him so I was able to talk to her a little. I told her the only thing I had to say is that she is adorable. It was nice having her with us. I had never seen her at a convention so it was a nice treat. I also told her that I had been looking forward to Jonathan’s party and I had a great time. Jonathan at this point gives me a high five. I told him I chose the ticket that included a party with him. He looked up sweetly. I showed him my pass since it was number 1. He read the name so he wrote Rosa on the autograph. During the photo op he did remember my name since he said, “Hi Rosie, Hi Taffy as he walked by me and Cathy who was also there. He started calling her Taffy and she nodded not really hearing what he said until he told someone else like Laffy Taffy. She corrected him but it stuck. However on my photo it says, “Super Rosa Thank you so much for a great party.” I also explained the smile to him and he got it. I gave him a hug and off I went.

Jonathan Woodward and Rosie
Carol was right behind me in line and I was not paying attention to her interactions but she did try to get. Carol had to go to work so we said some quick goodbyes and off we went. This time I did drive back to Hollywood for the evening party. I went back to Saxon’s hotel and crashed. We were all wiped. We slept for a bit and then got ready for the party. It was a private party, the tables were removed and the DJ was playing. Most everyone was around the sides. There were a handful of people on the dance floor. There weren’t more than maybe 100 people total at the club. We missed Ray and JenskiJen. I don’t go clubbing but I love to dance so I only do it at weddings. I started dancing and kept going for several hours. It was a great workout for me and I was sore the next day. Nectar and Dayne Johnson did show up. Jonathan did not so that was a bit disappointing but I had a great time overall. Thanks to Sean Harry and the Starfury staff for all their hard work. I enjoyed it and look forward to next year.
