Impromptu Trip to Universal – August 12, 2004

Impromptu Trip to Universal – August 12, 2004

Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin

I really wanted to send a thank you gift to the cast before they wrapped. I kept thinking about it and I just really wanted to give them something in appreciation for all of their hard work. I kept thinking of toys, something small but couldn’t come up with anything good.

I was planning on hanging out on a Thursday with Julie, whom I just met at the San Diego Comic Con. She lived near where I work so we had been trying to get together for two weeks. So we both had Thursday off. Now since Jewel posted about the wrap party and Alan was set to start shooting (according to IMDB) Into the West on August 16th, I thought this might be their last week shooting Serenity. Carol was on vacation and so I told her about wanting to go back to Universal. I e-mailed Julie and she was totally up for a little adventure. I told her I couldn’t promise anything. My mission was to get a little something to the cast, not necessarily directly to the cast. I was hoping for a nice production assistant or security guard.

The plan was to go in the afternoon and see if we could catch anyone coming back from lunch. We arrived at the infamous bushes around 2pm and sat around writing thank you cards for Chris, Joss and the whole cast. We included some candy. We waited for a while and finally we saw Nathan on his way to the set. He saw us and waved. I was holding the bag of goodies for him. Carol shouted, “We have a present for you.” So Nathan jumped out of the cart and took the bag. He had to run because he was needed on the set, he thanked us and he was on his way. I was just so happy to have been able to give him the bag. Poor dear was in such a hurry getting back in that he bumped his head.

Julie takes a picture of  Carol and Rosie in the bushes.

Nathan taking our gift to the cast.
So now I was totally satisfied. We continued to sit there hoping for a view of someone else. I really wanted a chance to talk to Adam again. Lo and behold who was walking toward the set, “Adam!!!” I called out to him and he came to us. Julie was wearing a Serenity shirt she made from the promotional material at the con. I told him about the gift bag and he noticed the Serenity shirt and said cool. He asked her name and shook her hand; simple little things that just make such a difference. So he told us they were filming actiony stuff today. He mentioned putting the security guard in his place at San Diego Comic Con and I smiled. I told him we came down now since I thought they might be wrapping up soon. He said their last day shooting would be August 26th-27th. Summer walked by as we were speaking but we did not call out to her. Then Adam had to go.  He did take a moment to pose for some pictures.

We were hoping to catch Summer later but we missed her as she made her way back onto the set. We waited for a while. It was hot and it was nice to sit in the shade. Once our tummy’s started rumbling we figured we needed to get some food and enjoy the rest of our time in the park. We made our way to the Mummy the Ride this is where we met Jeremy. He noticed the Serenity shirt and called out to us. We told him we were fans as we walked by. He was a Browncoat, a lurker more than a poster. He was in charge of the priority front of the line access. We were going to the single rider line since that was faster than the normal line. I looked back at Jeremy and he was calling us over. He said you’re lucky I like Serenity and hand us a front of the line pass for the Mummy. Normal wait time is 55 min the last time we checked. We are astonished, overjoyed and incredibly happy at our good luck. We went in and the line plus the ride was closer to 5 minutes than 10 minutes total. Afterward we posed for a picture with him and I gave him links to the OB. He is such a shiny Browncoat. It just made me proud to be a Browncoat. He was definitely a BDH to us that day.  It was a truly shiny day.

San Diego Comic Con - July 25, 2004

San Diego Comic Con - July 25, 2004

The full Cast for the first time!!!

Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Summer Glau, Sean Maher, Ron Glass and Joss Whedon.

First the most exciting thing happened at the end of the day. Adam Baldwin shouted my name; “Rosie!!!” as if I were a long lost sister.  Then he walked across a large group and gave me a big beautiful hug. That was the best moment, for many reasons, too many to go into but that was my highlight.

I’m starting with the day before because it will give a bit of understanding to my state of being. Saturday I worked a long shift. I wanted to get out early. I needed to go to Mass and then to graduation party. I left the party around 11:30pm. I arrived home at 12:45am and woke up 4:45am. That is 4 hours sleep. I require minimum of 5 hours to function properly. Anyway my little sister and I left at around 5:30am to go pick up my friends in Anaheim. We met up with Saxon around 6:20am and our first stop was at a gas station, the name of which was Alliance. Saxon pointed that out and took a picture. We were entering into a whole new world.

We arrived in San Diego at 8:41am. We got in very quickly and without problems. As we stood in line for our freebies, I decided to apologize in advance for anything I may say or do. On of the hazards of close proximity with our BDHs is my brain goes missing. The hand out listed the autograph session at 11am.  Afterwards we found out where the autograph session would be and it was at 2pm, the same time as the Serenity panel. People realized they would need to make a choice. My sister and 2 friends decided to go to the autograph session. The rest of us decided to go to the panel. We went downstairs to the main exhibit hall to see what there was to see. I was very excited at this point. I was eager to see the whole cast and get good seats.

My sister called when she found Jason Palmer. She knew I really wanted to get that poster for Alan. When Alan signed mine at the LA Comic Con he looked at it with such awe and wonder. So I decided to contact Jason and had already emailed him. Turns out Jason grew up in the city next to mine. So I told him I wanted to get one for Alan and he autographed it for him. He drew the dinosaurs and wrote over one “Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal” and over the other dinosaur “Mine is an evil laugh”. He wrapped it up and so now I had a specific mission: get this poster to Alan.

The strategy was to get to the Ballroom early and move up after each panel. It was around 11am so we made our way up to Ballroom 20. Those who wanted an autograph went to get in line. After the 11am session we tried finding better seats but apparently we did not come early enough. We sat in the 6th row on the right side. We had a huge screen in front of us. The room was seriously HUGE. I am glad we sat as close as we did. There were 4 sections I think it was 20 seats in a row per section all the way back. Someone said that the ballroom seated 4900. I was thinking if everyone in the autograph session came to the panel, everyone would not have been able to get inside.

I sat next to a young woman named Julie. She thought she recognized me, and asked if she knew me. I told her who I was and I was on the OB.  Then it clicked; she had seen pictures of me at fireflyfans.net since I was an extra on Serenity and had just had our latest encounter with the cast in the bushes. Jason Palmer had asked me to save seats for him and his wife Yelena. So I sat next to Julie and saved 2 seats. I walked over to the middle section and that’s where I saw a strong Browncoat contingent. Many Browncoats that I had already met in person and many others who I spoke to but had never met. It was great seeing everyone. They had excellent seats, front and center. The 12pm session was the Seed of Chucky. After watching a disgusting scene I walked out. I decided to go back to my car to get some food I had left there. I was really hungry.

When I returned I called Saxon and she came out. She told me that her daughter had spotted Joss downstairs in the exhibit hall. He signed an autograph for Saxon. Saxon and her daughter decided to go to the restroom.  I stayed outside eating my sandwich. They had just gone in when I see Joss come up the escalator.  He was alone, walking around like a regular Joe Schmoe. Then a mom and her 2 little girls around 8 years old stop and chat with him. He was very nice and chats and smiles. Then he took a few steps and someone else spotted him. Then he was just standing there and pulls out the cell. That’s when I think I might be able to get Saxon out. Joss was walking and talking on his cell. I run into the bathroom and shout, “SAXON OUT NOW, SAXON OUT NOW.” She was washing her hands and came immediately asking “Where? Where?” I love the fact she knew why I yelled. I point over to Joss as he was walking away and Saxon said, “Let’s go say hi.” So we start walking briskly after Joss. Saxon says, “We’re not stalking, we’re not stalking.” I am not sure what was said because I was in awe and he was on the phone. Seems like he was looking for the side entrance to Ballroom 20. He was looking the opposite way so I told him where he needed to go. He was on his cell getting directions and gives me a look, kind of like how did you know what I needed? He finished and Saxon asked for a picture and I pulled out the camera and took a picture. Saxon said, “Rosie your hand is shaking.” I was just so excited. I show her it came out fine. I remind Joss that I was on the set the first 2 days and he nods and shakes my hand. I don’t recall him really saying anything. There was another guy waiting to take a picture so we say bye. Then I see him walking off in the direction I told him.

                  Saxon, Joss and Ewok
               Joss at the Serenity Panel

Of course if my brain were not missing at that point I would have followed him to see the rest of the cast enter. Instead I went inside the ballroom. The people presenting were from Shaun of the Dead. I had no clue who they were. They showed a clip from a British sitcom called Spaced that was cancelled. It was hilarious so very smart. The one part that stood out to me was the 2 main characters a guy and a girl were in a stand off in an alley. There were 5 guys standing there. Then all of a sudden in pantomime, the 2 main characters pull out these big guns and start shooting. The guys also pantomime pulling out their guns and there is a great shoot out all in pantomime. It was the most hilarious thing I ever saw. I was rolling on the floor. One guy, pantomimes being shot and blood is spewing out his neck. His hand is making the spewing/spraying motion coming out of his neck. The whole clip was funny but that is what really stayed with me.  The whole room is rolling with laughter and then thunderous applause. The guy who made it says, “Made for geeks by geeks”. We all yell. It was very funny. I definitely hope it comes to DVD.

So they ended and then we all waited for Joss and company. The Ballroom was packed. We were asked to move to the center to allow others to sit. There was no gap all the way to the back.  If everyone in the autograph session had gone into the ballroom they would have exceed the maximum occupancy. I remember we told Joss how we came early and camped out at the session and it was full. When Joss walked out it was amazing. He was visibly stunned, moved, awed by the huge long, standing ovation. He had never had such a response before. He said some stuff I don’t recall at the moment. I said he had 9 things to share. It was beautiful to see them. The clip of Serenity was uber-shiny. I think it is more of a tease than a spoiler but I will not say anymore about it. Joss really did not give anything away.

Joss began the Q/A saying this is the first question so it better be good. Honestly I was just taking it all in. I enjoyed seeing Joss answer questions. I loved Nathan going for the funny. One question was about nicknames. Nathan said Adam is known as stinky pants. Adam smiled, kind of embarrassed. Morena said she is just called whore. Then I think it was Joss who said that’s not true sometimes we call you stupid. Sean thinks he deserves the tighpants nickname. All the girls swoon. He makes a face not understanding. Silly boy! It is just so obvious that they really get along and enjoy each other.

Another question was- What is the favorite thing about your character:

GINA: My gun ALAN: Finding non-violent solutions ADAM: Value of work NATHAN: Dancer legs JEWEL: Gets along with everyone MORENA: Intelligence SUMMER: Walking Barefoot SEAN: Simon’s love for his sister RON: Unpredictability commitment.

I really can’t remember it all I just enjoyed watching them and laughed A LOT! They are a great bunch and I love them all so much. The clip was shown once more and it was just awesome. It looked like an unaired episode but grander still, more epic. There WILL be sequels. In Joss I trust.

Afterward I tried to get close to give Alan his gift but they had to move out to the signing. I followed the throng and tried to find Carol. She was up close. She had waited since 11am but this was their moment. I walked outside behind the autograph session to find Saxon. She said Adam gave her a kiss on the cheek as he was walking to the session. I was still trying to get my gift to Alan. I asked a female security and she said no. Then a big tough guy said, “Step away from the door.”  Saxon tried to explain and he cut her off, “I am not going to ask you again.” So she backed off and started to turn around. I told her to follow me. I was hoping if they came in this way they may come out this way. Now, I was not sure of anything. I could not tell folks to come since all I was doing was hoping that we would get a glimpse, an opportunity to interact.

We waited for the whole hour. The rest of our group found us.  We saw when they came out. We were waiting for them to pass by and I had a gift for Alan. The same lead security guard told us to step back. The rest of my group stepped back but I stayed put. He said, “I am not going to ask you again.” Earlier he had been rude to Saxon so I was ready for this mans rude tone and was unfazed. I told him, as I am holding out the gift, “I have a gift.” This guy rolls his eyes. Another female security comes and stands next to me and he tells me to give it to her. I roll my eyes like yeah right and keep looking for Alan because I think I might miss him. The security guard, using a skeptical tone, says, "Well, if they acknowledge you."

So I see Nathan walk by and he smiles, Gina waves and smiles, I am still looking for Alan, I didn't even see Adam he was on the opposite side from us. I see Jewel and I think she may be the last of the crew. I called her name just as I see Alan at the back of the line and I said never mind. I was going to ask her to give Alan the gift. I didn’t even notice if she heard me but others said she did and then looked confused. Sorry Jewel.

All of a sudden I heard a booming voice, it was Adam shouting, "ROSIE!!!" like I am his long lost sister. I turned and saw him cut across the folks walking by. He gave me a big beautiful warm hug. I said, "Hi Baby." It just came out like that.

                     Adam hug

Then he walked past me to the rest of the group. He took pictures and handed out Serenity money. I was letting the others have their moment and still keeping an eye out for Alan. Then I see Alan look over to us to see what going on, I stepped out and I was able to give him his gift. We hugged briefly as in greeting; I gave him his gift and told him he did a great job with Sonny. At that point Adam was telling everyone he had to go. They were leaving.

                       Alan hug

I wish I had seen the security guards face. My friend did and she said his face just dropped. As she put it, he was moded. He was made to look like a fool.  The thing with our crew is that they are amazing people. They don't think of themselves as movie stars. They are fully grounded. I really want Serenity to be successful; I also hope our crew does not lose their grounding.  The whole cast and crew are truly shiny.

I was flying after my encounter with Adam. I still get all teary eyed. Actually I am in orbit. I am no longer flying and I am not sure when I will return to Earth. Adam was simply precious. He really is a warm and affectionate man. The entire crew is amazing and I am very happy for my recent encounters. I promise to come back down in time for the premier.

My Sister Carol’s ComicCon Report

I woke up at 4am and got ready to go. My sister and I went to go pick up some friends Marci and Jenae. Then we met up with Saxon and her family before we got on the freeway. We left for San Diego and were kind of confused when we got there because we really didn’t know where to go. Finally, we got in and got our nametags. The first thing we did was get in line, even though we did not know what the line was for. The line turned out to be for freebies, which had some good stuff. After that we went into the exhibit hall and looked around. All kinds of different companies where there, as well as artists. Marci was hoping to see some Firefly/Serenity stuff but we really couldn’t find anything. As we were walking I mentioned that it would be great if we ran into Jason Palmer the artist that had created the Firefly cast illustration that was sold during LA Comic Con. Then I turned around and hey there he was. So Marci and I bought his sketchbooks as well as another Firefly poster for each of us. I mentioned to him my sister, Rosie, and since she had emailed him for information he knew who she was instantly. So I called my sister and told her to come over. After we finished, Marci and I decided it was time to get in line for the autograph session.

We got in line at 11:15am even though the autograph session wasn’t supposed to begin until 2pm. We at first thought that we were the first in line but Marci went to check just to make sure and they took us to another line. People were already forming a line. As the time past, the line grew and grew and grew. We had the longest line that 1/3 of our line was still longer than the other lines for autographs and they hadn’t even come out yet! As soon as they came out everyone shouted and was excited. I first went up to Adam, as you can see in my picture and asked for a picture with him. Some guy was standing in front of us and he thought that was the guy and I was all pointing at Marci but then that camera guy told the guard and I wasn’t supposed to take a picture with him. Thanks Marci!! I didn’t find out until later that she had taken the picture.

            Adam, Nathan Sean, Ron Gina
           Carol and Adam

The security guards however were horrible. Jason Palmer, the artist, had given me sketchbooks to give to Joss, Nathan and Adam. As I was giving the sketchbook to Nathan, he assumed that he was to sign it and started signing it, then one of the security guards started yelling, however it wasn’t at me it was at Nathan. Nathan told him that it was a mistake and that it was a gift for him and put it away. I could not believe the guard had the nerve to yell at Nathan!!!! JERK!!!!!!!!! Anyways, of course Nathan got mad or ticked but I hope that guard got a scolding. After Nathan was Sean, he has such soft hands and a great smile. It was my first time seeing Sean and I’m glad I got to meet him. After Sean, I believe was Jewel, she was on the phone with someone she didn’t know and was laughing and passed the phone onto Morena as I moved on to Morena, Morena passed the phone on to Summer and when Summer asked who she was going to talk to Morena said I don’t know just talk and they both started laughing. Thankfully though, Summer gave the phone to someone else. I really wanted to meet Summer and she was such a doll. I mentioned to her that I was with Ewok, and Rosie in the bushes. She started laughing and said that she remembered that. I told her she was sweet and she said thank you honey. I’m not sure if I have all the cast members in order now that I think of it but I do remember what I said to each of them. Gina, I didn’t really get to talk to because she had the phone at this time but she said hi and smiled as she signed. It was funny and yet kind of sad because the phone was passed wherever I went. Alan was on the phone after and he said hi. Oh I didn’t get to talk to Ron that much but his hair is in cornrows for those that were wondering.  I gave Joss and Alan each a letter. I would have given everyone one but I didn’t think of it until later. Jenae showed me how to fold the notes into little t-shirts. Once I gave Joss his little T-shirt note he showed it to Alan and he said “Hey look how cool (holding the note up). They’re little shirts.” Joss was really nice and I gave him as well the Jason Palmer sketchbook and card. Then I told him that Jason wanted to give him the original sketches and told him where he was. He seemed really interested but I’m not sure if he heard because another guard was yelling at me for taking so much time. I left and was happy because I did get the chance to talk to everyone. Now after this, I talked to my sister on the phone, Rosie; she explained that our job, Marci, Jenae and I, was to get on the other side of the glass doors.

We got there easily and waited. This was the way that the cast would be going to come out. We waited and waited but not for long. Soon they came out, my sister wanted to give the poster she had bought from Jason Palmer to Alan. Now one of their guards started telling us to back off. My sister (the one who got us on set) told him she just wanted to give this to Alan and nothing else. They were getting and angry and one of the guards said she would give it to him. Rosie said that she wanted to give it to him personally. We saw them walking by but couldn’t find Alan. Then the best part of the day happened, “ROSIE!!! Adam comes over gives my sister a hug & kiss on the cheek and asks how she is. Then after they chat and she spots Alan. I introduced myself to Adam; he gives me a big hug and a kiss, as if we were family. He’s so nice. After talking to us, I ask him to take a picture with Marci. He then poses and smiles.

                Ewok Adam and Saxon

After he goes to Ewok “Hey look what I got, gives her some props (money used in the movie). Here pass some around.” He then gives her three bills, one she kept, one she gave to me and the other to Marci. We were all excited. My sister meanwhile was talking to Alan, gave him a hug and the poster. After they left, we all talked about how cool that whole experience was and also about the look on the guard’s face that was yelling at my sister when he saw Adam come over and give her a huge hug, as if she were family or an old friend. It was wonderful!! After a great day we went home. I went online and posted some pics and then off to bed. So that was my great experience.

'Versal Shindig Vist to the set of Serenity July 12, 2004

'Versal Shindig July 12, 2004

Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk and Jewel Staite

Ok, I still cannot believe it. First I'll tell you the gist then the details. We had personal interactions with Nathan and Alan and Jewel. Also we went on the set and toured Serenity full of the little details. Summer waved hi to us. It was such an amazing experience. I just can't do it justice. It seems like I think it and want it then I can achieve it.

I took my little sister Carol and met up with another girl Ewok whose mom, Saxon, was going to be an extra on Serenity that day. We arrived early and went out for breakfast before going in to Universal Studios. The park opened at 9am.

Once inside Universal, the three of us went straight for the tram tour to see if we could see anything. I spoke to this guy who said Ingrid is the tour guide who loves Firefly. We told him we were expecting many Browncoats so was there some way to sit together. He said they could work something out if we all came down at the same time. We were disappointed because we saw nothing about Serenity on the tour. Apparently they were filming indoors and we hoped it would be an outdoor shoot. After the tram tour we went down to the Mummy Ride, which is really cool, but way too brief. Then we went on Jurassic Park the ride.

Then we started to go back to meet the rest of the Browncoats arriving at 11:30am at the store Things From Another World in CityWalk. I really wanted to get a tour of Serenity for both my sister and her friend since they both got their work permits and were not able to be extras in the movie. I thought it would be great to get a tour of the set. So I went to inquire about it. I went to the VIP Experience and they said it needs to be set up through the production company, it is a closed set and they are not able to give tours unless someone authorizes it. Well, I was a little bummed and went to meet folks. I walked out of the park at 11:30 am and stayed at the store until noon. Only one Browncoat showed up, Wylie. We were planning on meeting up again at 2pm but we were a little busy. The four of us went to the 12:30pm showing of Terminator 2.

When we exited, we got wet at the splash zone. That is when I received a call from my mom saying Saxon called. Apparently she did not have my cell number. I called Saxon and she said they were at lunch and she was trying to get some autographs. I told her we are going to come down and find the closest spot to the stage 12. There is a spot just across from where their trailers are. We had to cross a couple of barriers but finally we arrived. Saxon came to us once we were there. She looked so cute with her blue hair. She will be easy to spot. Then she left and we were just standing there in the bushes behind the gates/bars separating us from them.

We waited to catch glimpses of the cast of Serenity or of Joss Whedon. We arrived around 1:30pm and I knew folks would be passing by until at least 2:30pm. So we waited. We waited patiently. Many people walking by just stared at the girls in the bushes. We were actually at the farthest point the Jurassic Ride line would extend to. There was a path, bushes and the gate separating the park from the studio lot. Finally one of the production assistants, Bryan, walked over to us and asked, “Did you pay money to stand in the bushes?”

I responded, “Nooooooo, We are just trying to see if we can get a glimpse of someone. I’m Rosie I was an extra on the set a couple of weeks ago. You would be our hero if you could get us on the set of Serenity.”

Bryan replied, “That would take a miracle. But I’ll see if I can get someone to come over… I can’t promise anything.”

I said, “Thank you, of course we understand, thanks.”

I really didn’t expect anything. Everyone is very busy on the set. However a short while later I saw Nathan start to walk over with Bryan. I told the girls, “Nathan is coming!!! Everybody calm down, be good, Nathan is walking over.” I was just way too excited; it was unfathomable that Cappy was walking over.  Nathan grabbed the bars separating us with both hands and my sister took a picture!

Nathan said, “They told me there were fans in the bushes and I just had to see for myself.”

Nathan checking out the fans in the bushes.

He looked at our shirts, two Blue Sun, one Serenity design and I was wearing a BDH t-shirt. My sister asked for a picture then Bryan still standing there said, “Here let me”. He took a picture and then the rest of the girls posed for a picture with Cappy.

               Carol and Nathan
                Rosie and Nathan

was not to be left out so I took a picture as well. We thanked him for coming over and taking the time and they walked off.

We were just basking in our unique opportunity and since I led the expedition I am declared their hero. Then before I know what is happening my sister told me to be quiet. She said she just heard Nathan say, “Alan come over and say hi to Rosie.”

Alan saying hi to Rosie

I was trying to rack my brains figuring out how Nathan knew my name. I don’t believe he remembered me but then I finally remembered I told Bryan my name. The girls were up against the gate and I stepped back onto the path trying to get calm. This was just too much!

Then I heard Alan say, “Hey Rosie is that you?” He was peering through my sister and her friend trying to find me!

The girls stepped aside and I stepped forward extended my hand to him and said, “Sure is sweetie.” I was holding his hand, honestly not sure for how long. I was talking to Alan and he remembered me. (I am so lucky I did not faint right then and there.) I told him I had given Saxon a copy of the picture we took. I asked if he got it and he said yes then corrected himself and tapped my hand with his finger and said, “No, she told me about it but I still haven’t got it.”  I told him he looked good.

Then somehow Nathan jumped into the conversation asking about the picture and I told Nathan about seeing Alan outside the Shrine Auditorium. Directing myself to Nathan, “Imagine I am paying money go and get his autograph and he is standing outside on his cell trying to figure out how to get in?”  Then Alan said, “Yeah I was trying to figure out how to get in.”

Jewel looking at the fans in the bushes
That was when Jewel walked up. She walked up with this look like she wondering what we were doing in the bushes. She didn’t make a comment though. She is truly beautiful. My sister told her so and took her picture.

Then Nathan said, “Let me take a picture of everyone.” He took my sister’s camera and took a group picture. Then he saw the bars were blocking people’s faces so he said “Let me take another one from this angel.” more straight forward.

Nathan takes our pic w/ Jewel and Alan

We then took a picture of the 3 of them and thanked them for stopping by. I told Jewel how much I loved her blog and thanked her for posting. I love the way she writes. They are so cool and walked back to the set. So we were still waiting because it is not yet 2:30pm and we hadn’t seen Adam yet. We still hoped for a glimpse.

Then I got a call from Audrey, my superhero production assistant. She said Saxon gave her a piece of paper about the VIP Experience. I had given that to Saxon earlier so that we could get permission to go on to the set. I explained to Audrey that I wanted a tour of the set of Serenity and they said it is a closed set. We needed someone from the Production Company to authorize a visit. She said ok let me see what I can do and hung up. So the waiting continued and then she called back not even 5 minutes later. She said she was sending an intern, Matt, to come escort us and give us the tour. I told her where we were and as soon as she saw us she said, “I am hanging up now.”

So now she was standing at the corner where we were and said, “Ok let me see if I can find someone…” I interrupt, “The gate is open over there!” So she turned and walked toward it. I am sure she was thinking if it’s open why are you in the bushes? She did not make any comments however. I introduced her to everyone with me. Then I declared Audrey my hero. I extended my hand and asked the guy with her his name; It’s Matt. Then we started walking over to the stage. Now I was focused on Audrey and Matt and what she was saying to him. I was not looking around since I expected no one to be around. The girls glanced over to the trailers and Alan was just sitting outside and waved. They tried to get my attention but I was focused on Audrey. After they told me, “Alan was waving at you.” I missed it. Audrey said she had to go but Matt would give us the tour.

We entered the soundstage. We could not really see anyone because we were on the opposite side of the ship. The ship was dark so it was hard to step in and look around.  We entered through the fore deck and went up into the bridge. They started rolling as we were in there. I placed my hand where Alan would rest his back. Just looking around the ship, I spotted the 3 switches and the 2 new panels Alan mentioned. We went back through the fore deck to the kitchen. My sister said, “Touch the handles”, so I did and I touched the top ring of Kaylee’s bunk. Lights were up and so was her sign. Then we entered the kitchen. People were lounging in the kitchen, just hanging out. Then we entered the engine room. I touched Kaylee’s hammock and noticed a poster on the wall; lot’s of Chinese touches. Then we walked out and over to the cargo hold. They were shooting there but we entered through a side way. We stood in front of the infirmary. They had just finished rolling, and then we walked in. Summer saw us and waved. All I saw was Nathan and Jewel. My sister said she saw Sean and Gina.

Then the tour was over, the other stages were down. Matt asked if we wanted anything more and I waited to see if anyone else had any requests but we were just floored with all we had been given we could not ask for more. We told him they had already gone above and beyond. So Matt escorted us to just outside the stage. The girls wanted to wander but I said no. We were going to be good. Then I saw Bryan going over to get Alan and he asked, “How did you get here?” I replied with a smile, “Audrey”, now I am not sure if I said it or just thought it but I added, “She’s a powerful woman.” Then Alan came out on his cell walking toward the stage. We all waved but couldn’t talk.

Then we went back through the gate and that was it really. It was way too cool for words. Standing next to Nathan, Alan and Jewel, then touring Serenity left me totally dehydrated. I could no longer think. I was overloaded with joy.

We all felt bad for those who didn’t make it but then again it would never have been possible for a large group. Bryan and Audrey both rock.

Meeting Alan Tudyk at LA Comic Con June 27, 2004

LA Comic Con June 27, 2004

Alan Tudyk

My reason for attending was Alan Tudyk. Other guests were JK Simmons, JJ Jameson from Spiderman and Lance Hendriksen, Weyland from Alien vs. Predator; he’s done a lot of stuff, Millennium among them. However, I was there for Alan. My little sister, Carol went with me. We arrived at 7:30am because I wanted the reserved seating. We were number, 83 and 84, which was the third row. Tickets did not go on sale until 9:30am. The majority were men, very few women present. This was where I met Danregal. We were in line behind him. Little did I know I would attend his wedding and still be in touch 9 years later! After we bought our tickets Carol and I left and returned just before noon.

Alan was scheduled for 12:30pm. As we were walking up to the doors of the entrance of the Shrine Auditorium in LA, I noticed a guy on a cell phone. He was wearing big shades and his golden hair was just perfectly coifed, that’s the only word I can think of to describe his hair. It is styled, brushed perfectly. So I am looking at him thinking wouldn’t it be so cool if that were Alan. Then as we were entering I said that to Carol and start to go in. She went out and took a look and said “Rosie! It is him! Get back here.” So I rushed out and Alan is walking away so I have to shout, “Alan!?” Alan turned around, kind of startled wondering who’s calling his name. I smiled and walked up to him. I told him I am a fan of Firefly, and I was on the set of Serenity this past Monday and Tuesday. Alan nods, however he has a very expressive face, so I think he is thinking: Oh no a crazy girl.  I showed him my picture with Adam. Then it seemed like he is thinking: Oh she’s not crazy. Of course that is just my opinion of what Alan was thinking. Then I asked if he could pose for a picture. He said sure and Carol took the picture. Then I asked if she could have a picture since she is also a fan. So then I took their picture. We thanked him, someone else approached and we went inside. Alan was very kind. I noticed there was someone waiting to lead him inside, so I was sure he was taken care of.

    Carol and Alan Tudyk
Once we went inside we found our seats and JK Simmons was already answering questions. Once Alan came on I started taking notes. There was a promotions rep from Fox there with Alan to give info about the movie I, Robot. One of the coolest things Alan said about his experience on I, Robot is the special effects guys did a fabulous job. He felt he was enhanced not erased. He had to wear a variety of green suits and they studied all of his movements. All of the expressions are Alan’s, transferred onto the robot, Sonny.

He was asked if he read anything to prepare for the role. He said yes, a booked title, Me, Myself and I How Children Develop Emotions. He also read the Alexander Technique. Sonny combines logic and emotions.

When asked about the green suit he said it was skintight and he received a lot of teasing. Will Smith kept calling the green suit Alan’s “all over body panty”. Other teasing remarks were: “It’s not easy being green” and “Irish speed skater.”

He did read Asimov; he said that it was all new to him. His favorite of the short stories is I, Robot.

About working with Will Smith, Alan said, “Will is a lot of fun.” This is a serious movie so when they were off camera there was a lot of levity.  He would ask Will, “How are you doing?” and Will would break out into some character and speak with an accent and reply, “My car’s stolen!” Then he plays along and asks, “Where’d you park it?” And a whole conversation would ensue.

Alan had 1 day between filming I, Robot and Dodgeball. The dodgeball tournament was shot in 2 weeks, there were 12 hours days of shooting and they played Dodgeball for 8 hours a day. They played against real Dodgeball Players and won a few times. He enjoyed being able to slouch again. For I, Robot he had to be all poised and speak very precisely, very articulate. He actually went to Julliard and everyone said no they’ll make you into a robot. Well he used everything he learned there.

About Firefly

What was it like when your show was cancelled? Did you think it would come back? Alan responds, “Joss said at the Christmas party he would pursue Firefly no matter what, even if only in etchings.”

Alan shared the red button story from Out of Gas – Alan ripped it out the last day of shooting on the bridge, held onto it for about a week then gave it to Joss. He said to Joss, “When your miracle gets here just push this button to call us back.” Then Alan joked, “The button wasn’t working properly but it finally worked.”

1st Day on the set- How was it being back together again?

Alan said, “We never really separated, Nathan is one of my best friends, always hanging out with Adam. Jewel lives in Canada so I hung out at her place a lot. Morena and I went to the same school. It was great being back on the set and being paid to hang out with folks I would hang out with anyway.”

How about being back in character? “It’s great. He said, “Being cancelled stinks. The first day of shooting, I was watching the monitor and Sean and Summer were on and I remember thinking, I haven’t seen this episode. Then I realized we’re making a movie.”

About the movie, what to expect? –River, the Alliance hires a new guy to come after River and Simon.

I lined up for the Q/A. When it was my turn I told Alan, “I never really understood Wash and his relationship with the Captain until I saw the pilot, Serenity. Wash was playing with the dinosaurs, and then it all just clicked, oh that’s Wash. I loved Dodgeball. I saw it the day it came out. It was very funny. I am really looking forward to I, Robot. I first noticed you in Knight’s Tale and 28 Days and then I saw you were going to be in Firefly and I knew it would be great for many reasons. I was just wondering, aside from Serenity, if there are any other projects coming out that I can look out for.” He said, “No not really. I did an Indy film called R/X where I play a gay drug dealer named Pepe, but not sure because of the circuitous route those movies take.”

Finally I told Alan, “You are a very talented actor with a broad range and if I had to compare you to anyone it would be Robin Williams.” Alan said, “Wow, thanks.”

Carol said everyone clapped at the things I said. I was focused on my conversation with Alan so I couldn’t tell. But I was very happy I said what I wanted to say. Someone else asked about the fact there was someone with scheduling conflicts and he wasn’t sure if it was Ron or Alan. Then Alan confesses, “It was me! But I am back.” Everyone clapped.

He said his favorite movie is Dark City because it is a matrix before the Matrix.

That is all I have about Alan’s Q/A.

Then it was Lance Hendriksen. A lot of fans were there for him. I wish I knew him. I remember he was on Millennium but I never actually got to see the show.  He did seem like a very nice and down to earth guy; very cool and physically fit.

Alan wore the white t-shirt with Serenity on it like the one Adam Baldwin has, with a black dress shirt. He looked great, very trim, but not too thin, just right. He also appeared very cool, friendly and easy going. I don’t think he understands he is gaining leaps and bounds in popularity.

Finally the autograph session started Alan was great. He took pictures, signed autographs and was just happy to be there. He said Will (Smith) was great and Alan shook his head like he couldn’t believe he worked with him. I told him he was very talented again. I had him sign my little address that I took to the set of Serenity. I have a Firefly picture on it as a cover. I showed him where everyone else signed and then he signed. He wrote, -Rosie, You say the nicest things. Great to meet you. Alan Tudyk. –

I told him I missed work and received points for taking a personal day. Carol brought the poster of the cast that was signed by the rest of the cast back in December. He liked it and wanted one. I knew the artist’s name is Jason Palmer; he wasn’t there that day though. Once Alan signed, my sister told him that last time she asked Adam for a kiss and she gave him one so she wanted to know if she could give a kiss to him.  He said, “Sure” and leaned across the table. I took a picture. Everyone behind her went, “Aaaaaaaaaaah” Then Alan said, “Now we’re having a kissing booth.”

I walked around looking for the Firefly poster. I wanted to get one for Alan but then I just wanted to get contact info for anyone else who wanted one. It seemed like Alan really wanted one. He said Nathan had one. The website for the poster www.jasonpalmer.net. There was a long line for autographs so we decided to leave since our time with Alan was over. But once again as I am driving home I am thinking I should have stayed longer.

Overall - A totally wonderful experience.

My Day On The Set of the Movie Serenity 2004

On The Set of Serenity June 21 and 22, 2004

Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau, Joss Whedon and Christopher Buchanan

The following is a journal I kept of my experience on the set. I wanted to capture everything and report back to all. I had to be on my knees or sitting back on my feet. Physically it was exhausting but I am so over the top thrilled by the experience. It was the realization of a dream and I really was getting all misty eyed at my great fortune. So here goes, no spoilers aside from who is there which is the crew:

Serenity Day 1 June 21, 2004

           My brother Ruben in costume.
                   Rosie in costume.
So I awoke at 4 am my alarm was set for 4:15 am. My brother, Ruben was also accepted as an extra and we needed to leave by 5:30 am. Our call time was 6:45 am sharp! We arrived at Universal Studios at 6 am since there was very little traffic. We parked and made our way to Stage 18. There was construction going on. We were directed to where the trailers were setting up. We saw the wardrobe trailer and then we saw Gina Torres walking to her trailer. I didn’t try to stop her; I let her take care of her stuff. When she came out again she was looking my way so I introduced my brother and myself. She was very kind and directed us to whom we needed to talk to then she went into another trailer to get ready.

My brother and I made our way to the Back Lot CafĂ© waiting until 6:45am to get into wardrobe. We got into wardrobe and then I was waiting and saw Cappy drive by, he was just getting in. I was very good, I did not shout or scream, I was very excited so this was quite an achievement. Finally I was sent to hair and Kim was my hairdresser. She kept fiddling with it trying to figure something out. She put it up in with two ponytails braided and rolled up. She stuck in lots of pins and curled the edges. She also created vertical curls, ringlets on my bangs. Afterwards I went to make up and had my eyeliner removed and some “dirt” was put on. Once I was done I headed back to the stage to wait.  I just saw Barbara Streisand get into a cart. They are filming Meet the Fockers across from Serenity. It is now 8:03 am and we are now waiting.

10:14am-We just finished rehearsing. So far I have seen Zoe, Mal and Jayne walk by. I was sitting down then I look up as they are walking past. They are tall folk. Then Joss walked by. I did not try to stop them. I did get a chance to say hi to Joss on his way back in. Haven’t said anything to Adam or Nathan yet. It is so unreal. I am on the set with Cappy, Jayne, Zoe and Joss this is so cool! I feel like this is perfectly normal, I am sure that is due to all the prayers and shiny thoughts. Thank you!!! They are rehearsing and we are once again waiting.

11:36am-More rehearsing. This time I got the chance to talk to Adam. I told him I was from the OB, (the official Firefly board) since he posts there often. He said what a great community the board is and I agreed. I told him about my first shindig experience.  He said he received the shirt that says I’m first in line for the Firefly Movie it has shindig photos on the back. He said he gave Nathan one. I asked if he had a Happy Father’s day. He said it was very nice. Earlier I saw Morena walk by but did not have a chance to say hi.

2:15pm-We’re just coming back from lunch. Now I saw Summer. She is in the scene now. Nathan & Summer are so funny, very playful. At one point Nathan and Adam got into a hand fight a la Laverne and Shirley, very cute. Adam spoke to me more asked if I was thirsty and then brought me a bottle of water. He is very kind and considerate. Still haven’t spoken to Cappy, he is busy concentrating and not next to me. I am next to Gina and Adam. Gina is great and also playful.

Serenity Day 2 June 22, 2004

6:10am-We finished yesterday at 8:15pm. Got home by 9pm and took a shower and went to sleep. Here’s what happened after lunch. The scene was more focused on Zoe and River. So many angles to shoot and the lighting so carefully created. I did get a chance to speak to Christopher Buchanan, executive producer of Serenity and the man who gave me this opportunity. I wanted to thank him personally. I missed him that morning, so I walked over to him. He was speaking to Cappy and was just about to leave. I stopped him, introduced myself and identified myself as from the board. When I began speaking to Chris, Nathan kind of stepped back out of the conversation. Once he realized I was a fan he stepped back in and asked my name and said, “Nice to meet you”, shook my hand and smiled. I was thanking Chris for this opportunity and emphasizing how much it meant to me. I didn’t approach Cappy because I did not want to invade his space so it was very cute the way he stepped up, asked my name and shook my hand. I of course told him he was doing a great job. It was time to get back in place so I left them. It was just so very cool.

Later, on a short break I stepped outside and found Adam sitting on the rail alone. He greeted me saying, “Hello Gorgeous” and I was cool and said “Hello Handsome” He asked how it was going. He is so sweet and considerate. I finished drinking my bottle of water and told him I had to get back inside. He said he would see me there. Near the end one of the production assistants, Audrey, said she had asked Adam if he would be willing to take a picture with Rosie. She said Adam replied, “Anything she wants.” So once I was on another break she mentioned Adam was outside and willing to pose. She told me to be discreet with the camera. You are not allowed to take pictures on the Universal lot. So my brother took my picture with Adam. Then Adam said, “Now a head shot.” He is 6’ 4” and I am 5’ 2”. Adam realized he needed to come down for this so he stooped to be next to my head. I thanked him and went to give him a hug and received a smooch on the cheek. Very sweet and made my day! I wrote thank you cards for the cast. I gave Joss his card when I said hi that morning. I gave Adam his card then after taking our pictures.

              Adam Baldwin and Rosie

The headshot, Adam had to come down for it.
I went back inside and Summer was sitting there waiting. They were going to change lighting and re-shoot a scene. I took the opportunity to give her her card.  I told her I was a fan and was honored to be a part of this movie. She felt bad my first experience as an extra involved being on my knees all day. I told her I was having a great time. I also told her I thought she was doing a great job. River is a complicated character and she is doing great. Summer is such a sweet young girl.

Gina and Nathan wrapped up. Then it was Adam’s turn with Summer. I wasn’t in these shots but I stayed around to see what was happening. I was finally released at 8:15pm I was tired. I do have to say though that Joss works very hard, 12 hour days of constantly directing the actors, the cameramen, and in general everyone. We all wait our turn but Joss is ceaseless in his action all day. Joss is great!

Now we start on the activity for Day 2.

7:45am-Checked into wardrobe, went to hair and makeup, came to the stage and grabbed some breakfast. Gina came by looking for a muffin. Chris Buchanan walked by later as I was eating. Then Adam came by to get something to eat.  Adam stopped to chat as he was walking back. He said, “Hi Rosie”. He asked if I posted. I said no, too tired. He said he went home to play with his kids. I gave him a little gift. He thanked me for the card. Adam is such a very cool man, completely down to earth and real.

Summer walked in and saw me and waved hi, came over and gave me a hug and thanked me for the card. She said her mom was in town and thought it was very nice. Summer is such a doll, very gentle and graceful.

A little later I am still waiting to go on the set. Adam walks by with Nathan. I am speaking to the production assistant Audrey. They walk by to get some food. On their way back I see Adam with Nathan following. I hand Nathan his card. I included the triangle Firefly patch. He is walking back and raises the patch and shouts, “I love this.” This has really been a wonderful experience. All I need now is a chance to get on the ship!

12:30pm-Finished shooting and now I am waiting. I was able to get Summer’s autograph before she left. She wrapped early. Later Nathan, just before we were going to shoot a scene shouts, “Rosie, thanks for the card and the patch.” Gina is standing next to him and says, “You got a patch? All I got was a card. Guess you’re her favorite.” Nathan just smiles and says “Yeah”. I smile back and say, “He’s the Captain.” Gina says “And who’s the one who keeps saving him. Post that on your message board.” Then I laugh and we begin shooting the scene. All was said in teasing fun. It was great. Once we are done, Nathan, Adam and Gina go off to shoot another scene. It looks like we are almost done for us extras. I ask Gina for her autograph. She is signing just as they call for rehearsal. Not able to get Nathan or Adam’s yet. I tried when he was coming in but no time. Then they left for a break. I am still waiting.

2:44pm-OK, now I am fully satisfied. Audrey, the production assistant let me on to the set of Serenity, our beautiful and beloved ship. It is still under construction but the hallway where the crew’s quarters are is where we entered. As I touched the top ring of Cappy’s quarters, I was facing the bridge and looked down. I thought of all of those on the OB and wished they were here. Then I saw the kitchen. They have the stenciled vines. Then I walked over to the bridge. Still finishing painting but the guys in there said I could go in; nothing but paint but oh so sweet. I stood right where Wash sits. No pictures but an experience I will never forget. Then we were directed to the Cargo Hold. We were not able to go in but I was able to see the doors to the infirmary, they were closed. I am thrilled beyond belief. Really I have no words. I really wished every Browncoat could be here from the bottom of my heart.

Wednesday June 23, 2004

As I was waiting I did get another opportunity to talk to Joss and I told him he is a hard worker. We are waiting but he is constantly working.  Joss said, “It is harder to wait than to work.” Later as they were coming back from break he was walking with some folks and said to some guy with him, “I am a hard worker.” he smiled and nodded to me.

I wrapped around 6pm. I did not get a picture with Cappy or Gina. I decided to go back onto the set and see if they were still there. They were all sitting together waiting. I went over to say good-bye to Adam and told him I was wrapped. He gave me a hug and another smooch on the cheek, so sweet and sincere. I told him I was truly honored to be a part of this and had a great time. Chris Buchanan was sitting next to him and I told him I even got to go on board Serenity and how cool that was. I asked Adam for his autograph. Then asked if he thought it would be ok to ask Nathan he said sure. So I thanked them both and walked over to Nathan. He was playing with Adam’s daughter, a beautiful young girl. I interrupted and told her I was a big fan of her dad and had already gotten his autograph and I showed her. Then I asked Nathan for his.  He said sure and wrote a little something, thanking me for coming and playing with them. He was very cool. Adam’s daughter asked Nathan if he played scrabble and Gina said she likes making words up and dares people to challenge her. Nathan made up a word and said I don’t think so Gina. I said good-bye to both Nathan and Gina and told them it was a great experience. Then I walked out of the soundstage.

I walked back to my car very tired and completely overwhelmed. This truly was the realization of a dream. It was so much better than I could have hoped for. I did not act like a weird fan girl. I was able to restrain myself, though it was a conscious effort. As I was driving back thinking about this experience I just shed tears of joy. How often do dreams come true? I love Firefly; I love Joss and everyone on the crew of Serenity. They are doing such a great job, working very hard. I was truly floored from the experience. I was overwhelmed and awed and transitioning back to this reality. It makes me feel good knowing that where I have been still exists and they are continuing to work on the BDM.

I am still flying high right now.
